Body Language: How to Project Positive Body Language

Do You Know Your Body Says A Lot More Than You Know?

Your body says more than the words that come out of your mouth. During the conversation, speaking conveys 20-30% of the message, while your body language represents 70-80% of the message. Body language is the communication of your message through body posture without speaking a single word, known as a nonverbal form of communication. You can convey your message through facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, and body posture.

Positive Body Language

There is a famous saying, “Your action speaks louder than words.”  It means you don’t always have to speak to express what’s on your mind. Sometimes your body gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact express the same that spoken words can. However, this does not always work, as cultures, habits, and backgrounds also play distinctive roles. Some cultures have different meanings to certain body gestures and can be confused.  It’s also possible to confuse some gestures due to personal habits.

You can figure out what another person is thinking about you by reading his/her body gestures. When you can read these signs, you can use them for your benefit. It will help you to understand what another person is not able to say. Moreover, it also helps you adjust your body language to be more confident, positive, engaging, and approachable when communicating with people. You can certainly tell whether a person is interested in talking with you or not from their smile, hand movements, eye connection, the direction of feet, and other non-verbal gestures.

For example, if he/she is looking somewhere else while talking with you, it means he/she is getting bored and not interested in your talk. And if he/she is nodding the head slowly while you are talking, that indicates he/she is trying to understand your problem. With these realizations, you can make good choices in deciding whom to speak to and what subjects are appropriate to strike.

Do You Know The Difference Between Open And Closed Body Language?

Open body language indicates people with public personalities. They are expressive, interactive, and hands-on.  People with closed body language, on the other hand, are closed personalities. They are the ones with hidden intentions. Open body language includes uncrossed legs and arms and looking at other people while talking. Closed body language has crossed arms and legs and looking down or away during the conversation.

Are You An Interactive Person?

Your body posture indicates your personality. Following are some signs of an interactive person having open body language:

  • Uncrossed legs: It symbolizes that person is relaxed and wants to have a conversation with you.
  • Uncrossed arms: Open arms show frankness in the talk and an honest image of a person.
  • Eye contact: Maintaining eye contact during the discussion ensures that a person is speaking the truth. It also shows the effort of the listener regarding his interest in your talk.

Additionally, the following are the signs of a person having closed body language:

  • Crossed arms: Most of the time, it indicates disagreement that neither are you interested in what the person has to say nor want to change your mindset.
  • Crossed legs: Crossed legs give the impression of an aggressive nature.
  • Looking away: not maintaining eye contact is a symbol of getting bored or lying. Usually, people look away when they hide their feelings or when they are telling a lie.

Learn How To Interact With People With Closed Body Language

Closed body language is a barrier to approaching a person. You can read what is going on in the mind of a covered body language person by observing certain things in their eyes, like

  • Look into their eyes, try to convince them that they can trust you, and open up to you.
  • Watch out for their smile; if it’s just stretching of lips, they pretend to be happy.  Show empathy and ask the reason for the sadness. It can help a person to open up a bit.
  • Make a comfortable environment for the conversation.
  • To break the crossed arms of a person, hand something to the individual and start the conversation.

These tips do not go for everyone; there are exceptions. Some people have habits of doing things in a certain way.
