Emotionally intelligent employees, sounds interesting? Let’s dive in

Have you assessed the Emotional Intelligence skills of your present employees? Is Emotional Intelligence skill assessment a part of your hiring process?

If the answer to the above questions is No, you should start including Emotional Intelligence in the must-have skill list immediately. And this should be there for all levels of employees.

Why must your employees have EI Skills?

As per the research done by Capgemini Research Institute, the demand for emotional intelligence skills will rise six times on average in the next 3 to 5 years. To add on, during their survey, they found 83% of organizations believe that a highly emotionally intelligent workforce will be a requisite for success in the years to come.

The demand for emotional intelligence will increase by 6.4 times in insurance, 6.1 times in retail banking, 6.0 times in automotive, 5.9 times in retail, 5.8 times in consumer products, and 5.7 times in utilities.

EI Skills – The requirement for all levels

As per the past trend, employees, especially those in nonsupervisory roles, were not assessed or appraised adequately for their emotional intelligence skills. But with technology growth, Artificial Intelligence, Automation is taking away many job roles. Around 40% of organizations have started testing their employees for EI skills while hiring or assessing.

How are organizations ensuring having employees with EI skills?

In their hiring process, 36% of organizations have included Emotional Intelligence skills for their nonsupervisory employees; 51% of organizations have included this skill for the mid-management level, while 52% of organizations have included this skill for senior management.

To assess their existing employees, 39% of organizations have included Emotional Intelligence as a necessary skill for nonsupervisory employees, 50% organization has included this skill as necessary for mid-management roles, and 51% organizations have included this skill senior management roles.

Emotional intelligence and employees productivity

The reason organizations should include Emotional Intelligence skills as necessary can be well explained with Capgemini’s help. Investment in emotional intelligence can bring twice as much return in three years.

Moreover, 60% of organizations, on average, attested to get benefits and improvements in productivity, employee satisfaction, market share, and lower attrition to the extent of 20% or more over their existing levels. Some direct benefits are:

a. Increase in revenue: 27%

b. Increased productivity/operational efficiency: 30%

c. Direct cost savings: 28%

d. Lower attrition: 28%

That is why more and more organizations now include emotional management skills as mandatory in their hiring process and the appraisal process.

Some organizations have also arranged for their employee, managers, and senior managers to get trained in Emotional Intelligence. Capgemini’s report says that 42% of organizations conduct EI training for their senior management and leadership teams.

Improving EI Skills

From an employee perspective, the Capgemini survey found that nearly 70% of employees agree that they are willing to improve their Emotional Intelligence skills, as long as doing so is part of the performance management system.

Hence, if you are planning to increase your organization’s productivity and profitability, you must have a list for hiring at all levels.

Get all your employees assessed for their Emotional Intelligence skills, and if a gap is there in the ability, arrange to get them trained on these essential skills.

So, if you still haven’t, now is the time to find out your team’s emotional intelligence.
